Which brings us to the topic- 'How important are University Degrees!'
Today every firm or company needs people who can increase their sales and market share. When such a thing is done more economically, they increase their profits. All this has a bearing on the valuation enjoyed by the firm or company. A different approach in your hiring can lead you to the desired objectives. Let us see how?
Once upon a time IBM faced a situation where in they needed 'Customer Engineers' for their massive expansion programme and were unable to recruit them in desired numbers. The reason was 'Graduate Engineers' in such a big number could not be found. To gain perspectives for decision making, they decided to examine the task a 'Customer Engineer' was performing.
Customer Engineer's job was to keep their Data Processing and Office Equipment in running condition so that the customer was able to use the equipment as and when required. For this he used the company's own manuals and other resources to deliver what was expected of him. Apart from this he was IBM's Brand Ambassador. He was company's 'relationship manager on the spot'. During this analysis the company realized that most of the job skills were being provided by IBM during their internal training programme. They further discovered that being of a 'Graduate Engineer' qualification was may be desirable but not essential. When they hired persons with lesser qualifications and put them on the job, they found that new recruits were equally good. Perhaps it was because a motivated person performs according to the challenges of task before him. In practical situations his knowledge about the job, his skills, his habits, his attitude towards the work, and what the job means to him are the factors that determine the out come.
All this happened a very long time back. Yet I think there is some thing in it for Indian Industry.
There are 1400 B-schools in the country today. Then there are scores of Franchisees of Universities in every town offering as many management programmes. Lakhs of students join these institutes and every one successfully completes those programmes and still companies are struggling to assemble a viable and stable sales force. We have found companies can gain a lot of ground by looking at their hiring process, amending their policy and paying little more attention to those hired by them. When you hire and compensate an employee on the basis of an observable track record and not on the basis of a 'PG Degree' you gain a lot in terms of loyalty and trust of employee. Then comes the question of keeping the person attracted to the job. That is easily achieved by paying a little more attention to his development. Therefore, if you need to look at hiring of stable and capable field force let us know. We have a solution that addresses this need of employers in a time bound manner.
